Native Bee Garden

Te Atatu Peninsula

With a modern minimally designed home positioned on the property to take in views of the harbour, and built around a magnificent Pohutukawa tree the back shady area of the garden was easily forgotten.

The brief was to make use of the secluded situation and design a solution that will be simple and refined yet fun for the young family.   The boys get in the garden and play amongst the plants with their diggers! Using the mighty Pohutukawa as the basis of the colour palate and reinforcing the strong lines of the home we selected a mixture of hardy native plants that will bring colour and interest to the garden all year. Robust white lavender is also included to act as a base for native planting. This hard working plant while also attracting pollinators has relaxing, soothing properties that are perfect outside a bedroom window [and for a mum of 2 young boys].

plant list: Astelia chathamica ‘Silver Spear’, Piper excelsum subsp. Psittacorum, Leptospermum scoparium ‘Wiri Susan’,  Phormium ‘Platt's Black’, Lavandula pedunculata ‘Sensation White’, Muehlenbeckia astonii
